Pleomorphic adenoma soft palate excision

Definition: Pleomorphic adenoma is one of the common benign tumors involving ectopic salivary glands. Ectopic salivary glands are a common occurance in the palatal area.

Clinical details:

60 years old female patient was admitted with a large swelling the the right side of soft palate.


CT scan showed a globular mass involving the submucosal portion of soft palatal area on the right side. There was no evidence of bone erosion.

Management:

Under general anesthesia patient was put in Rose position. Incision is made over the mass. The mucosa was separated from the mass. The mass was removed in toto.

The wound was closed in layers.

 

 

 

 

Discussion:

1. Palatal pleomorphic adenoma appears as a painless, slow growing mass.

2. It is common during the 4th and 5th decades

3. Some of these tumors may recur

4. Malignant transformation is also seen in 2% of these patients

5.It is encapsulated

6. Bone erosion may be seen in some cases

7. Treatment is by total excision which should involve the periosteum
